“Parasite” vs “The Handmaiden” (KDrama Movies)
“Parasite” vs “The Handmaiden”
I prefer the devious plot of The Handmaiden that’s a masterclass in next-level betrayal and of course the extraordinary acclaimed acting of my beloved Kim Tae-Ri*

Handmaiden all day! Visually I find it more stunning and I think the characters individually are more interesting (Kim Tae-ri and Kim Min-hee won several Awards). Parasite makes a great companion movie to it though thematically but none of the main cast acting is to be mentioned or won any awards.
All in all, “The Handmaiden” is proof that a movie can have a plot, amazing direction, acting, scenery, craziness and the most beautiful package possible. And even if it is almost two hours and a half long, it feels like a breeze. You will fall in love with this movie. Just plain great.-

Both Parasite (2019) and The Handmaiden (2016) are acclaimed South Korean films exploring class, manipulation, and revenge with dark humor, but Parasite focuses on socioeconomic warfare with its famous twist, while The Handmaiden, directed by Park Chan-wook, offers a more erotic, twisted, and visually lush period piece about a con within a con set in Japanese-occupied Korea, inspired by Sarah Waters’s Fingersmith. The choice depends on preference: Parasite for its biting social commentary, or The Handmaiden for its intricate plot, stunning visuals, and sensual thriller elements, though many fans love both.

🗣️ Was Parasite inspired by The Housemaid?
The script is based on a play Bong wrote in 2013. He later adapted it into a 15-page film draft, which was split into three different drafts by Han. Bong said he was inspired by the Korean film The Housemaid (1960) and the 1930s Christine and Léa Papin incident. Based on ballots submitted by 500 actors, directors, and other Hollywood professionals, The New York Times has found that Bong Joon Ho’s 2019 thriller Parasite has been voted the best film of the 21st century.
* Kim Tae-Ri gained widespread recognition for her breakthrough role as Sook-hee in Park Chan-wook’s critically acclaimed film The Handmaiden (2016), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and earned her the Blue Dragon Film Award for Best New Actress.
